How the course works
The fun and interactive three and four day ‘KNOW YOUR ANTIQUES’ courses cater for all abilities from the complete beginner to the more advanced enthusiast.
Over the three and four days we examine a huge variety of British furniture, dating pieces, learning styles and recognizing fakes from the genuine article. You will learn to understand different woods and identify different materials, recognise adapted and transformed furniture, the art market and the secrets of the trade.

After the three or four days you will have much more confidence when looking at furniture and be able to appreciate antiques and ultimately invest wisely.

Although it is not a restoration course it is held in my workshop, so we do look at items in various stages of restoration.

The courses start at 9.30am each day and finish at 5pm. It takes place in my showroom and workshop on a quiet farm just east of Forfar in rural Angus. The four day advanced course in May and August is aimed at people who have been on a previous course and also professionals such as auctioneers, dealers, conservators, restorers, collection managers, collectors and enthusiasts. People who are considering entering into the trade will also find the advanced course very useful. Further information can be supplied on demand.
A delicious lunch is provided daily, and all stationery is supplied
Courses have been attended by the Art and Antiques Unit of Scotland Yard, Antique dealers from many different fields, collectors and guides of Stately homes, and many other enthusiasts from Japan, Russia, USA, South Africa including all corners of Europe.

One course has been televised by the BBC in a program on Glamis Castle.

Comments from previous courses

Q: What did you find most interesting over the three days ?

A: "Informal discussions after examining individual pieces, hands on assessments. Learning about different woods and construction of pieces through the centuries. Delighted with all aspects of the course and would return to learn more, it is a far bigger subject than I thought." ( Mr M.Barron, Angus)

Three days was the perfect length for the course, well done with all the effort and enthusiasm Jeremy.

To secure your place please enclose a non-refundable deposit of £100 made payable to Jeremy Gow. Confirmation with exact details of location will be sent.
